News : Toxicon rework and cover Confidence Man’s ‘Boyfriend (Repeat)’. Headbanging ensues.

By on September 26, 2017

Melbourne metal band Toxicon, who recently finished up their ‘Circling’ national tour has made headlines once again. This time for something a little different. Toxicon has covered Confidence Man‘s ‘Boyfriend (Repeat)’ single as a way to negate triple j‘s claim that the Australian group are this country’s “best up and coming live band”.

A little back history. Earlier this year triple J posted a live performance of the aforementioned single from the Brisbane electro-pop group at Splendour in the Grass and stated the group was “Australia’s best up-and-coming live band”. Soon after, the comment section was met with general concern for the decision to name Confidence Man as the best up-and-coming live talent that the country has to offer. One comment reads, “If this is the best up and coming live band in Australia, then we as a nation are fucked”. Judge for yourself.

Check out the reworked version by Toxicon below.

Toxicon comments:

Recently there was quite the upset over Triple Js call on the “Best up and coming live band” with their song Boyfriend (repeat). Maybe it wasn’t everyone’s cup of tea but but surly there must be something to this song, some hidden depth? Alas there was not. During the drive home from an interstate show the boys and I had a listen and let’s just say, yeah nar. That’s a pretty shit call on Triple Js behalf. Something has to be done. We decided to do a cover version of Boyfriend (repeat). Get into this three dimensional masterpiece and rework it from the inside out.

We genuinely wanted to stay true to the song and just splash a bit of heavy over it, see if it could be improved but it all ended up being a bit of a piss take.  You know the old saying, you can’t polish a turd but you can roll it in glitter. We actually ended up having some fun toward the end of the song but by that point had pretty much abandoned the original work of art. What’s next you may ask? Well we are thinking of running a go-fund me to do a matching music video for Boyfriend (repeat). We’ll set the limit to $50, that should be enough.

While you’re here, check out Toxicon’s latest single ‘Circling’ from the album of the same name. The band recently finished up a massive national tour to promote the new album.
