Album Reviews : Decryptus – The Necrotic Design

Listening to the second EP from New South Wales band Decryptus, The Necrotic Design, can’t help but make me think back to around 2005 when I first began exploring Perth’s local metal scene and coming across bands like Pathogen and Vesper’s Descent. Here were two similar bands, both pedaling a similar brand of simple melodic death metal that sometimes succumbed to the trappings of metalcore, but nonetheless provided an entertaining, if a little uninspired, listen. I’m probably thinking about those two because that’s exactly what The Necrotic Design is: simple, unimaginative melodic death metal, that despite some of its shortcomings is still an entertaining listen.

This EP is a pretty short affair, coming in at around the 15 minute mark, but it feels weighty enough to give listeners a feel for what to expect from them. The majority of the riffs are standard, Amon Amarth-inspired passages; catchy and consumable, easily accessible but still satisfying. The drum work punctuates the riffs at precise times, making them more impactful and memorable. The vocals are slightly rudimentary, but aside from the odd deeply slurred section, they fit the music well.

The Necrotic Design chugs and tails its way through three parts, one of which I smiled at even more when hearing Will Magnusson utter Big Brother’s motto from Orwell’s classic 1984. This, personally, may be a little brief for the asking price, but nonetheless others may relish the chance to support an up and coming Aussie metal act that seems to have wind in their sales. Decryptus have offered as a straight up, no questions asked melodic metal offering, and I hope they keep it up, because this is a promising beginning to the exact type of metal that might put them on the international stage with a bit of luck and a spoonful of concrete dedication.
