Articles : Dead Letter Circus, keeping music fans safe this summer
Dead Letter Circus will be venturing out for a short but sweet tour of Victoria this December to promote Urban Spread, an initiative partnered by the TAC to promote suburban music fans staying alive on the roads this summer. DLC are currently promoting their stunning new album ‘Aesthesis’, now available from 24Hundred.net.
Vocalist, Kim Benzie sat down with Metal Obsession to share the band’s ‘Cornerstones Of Sound’, a list comprised of inspirational songs from various bands that have had a profound influence on the way Dead Letter Circus sounds today.
First up we have ‘Resonate’ by Sydney based progressive rock group, Cog. Since the beginning of their career, Cog has received praise from various media outlets and fans in Australia and across the globe. Cog’s most successful release, ‘Sharing Space’, went to number two on the ARIA charts and reached gold status, respectively. In 2010, the band parted ways to start work on individual projects.
Kim Benzie writes, “The vibe this song invokes a very personal and inspirational emotion.”
If you don’t know who Tool are by now, please consult your doctor for a brain scan. Tool initially begun their career as a heavy metal band and eventually evolved into the dominating alternative metal group they have become today. Tool have pushed the limits of controversy and musical merit with their engrossing, and at times, perplexing, subject matter and visually striking music videos.
Kim Benzie writes, “Epic journey music that tells a huge tale while keeping you enthralled.”
There is no denying that Phil Collins has influenced a plethora of bands and musicians throughout his illustrious career, moreso with the classic track ‘In The Air Tonight’. The man is a machine, not only is he a great singer, drummer, multi-instrumentalist, songwriter and producer, the man has also found time do dabble in a bit of acting as well. Kim Benzie puts it best, “Phil is the master!”
Jane’s Addiction is another one of those awesome bands who rose to fame and dominated the world during the 90’s, a time which spawned some of the best musicians and music in alternative rock. What sets Jane’s Addiction apart from most rock groups is the band’s one-of-a-kind musical demeanour, and of course Perry Farrell’s unique vocal range, which at times verges on a rather young and adolescent tone. Kim Benzie writes, “This is such an epic heavy guitar song without relying on any generic components.”
There is no denying how captivating and dense the layer of sound is on Massive Attack’s ‘Mezzanine‘, an album which received critical acclaim at the time of its release, and continues to receive praise to this day.. The album has since reached platinum and gold status the world over. While the music may not necessarily be sorely affiliated with heavy metal and hard rock music, it has definitely influenced many with its great ambience and melodic undertones. Kim Benzie writes, “Brooding dark and beautiful.”
Deftones have solidified their long lasting presence within the music industry with some of the most beautiful and hard hitting music. The album ‘White Pony’ being one example. The album plays host to a great selection of great music, one of which includes a guest appearance by Tool frontman, Maynard James Keenan. That song being ‘Passanger’. Kim Benzie writes, “This song is so fucking epic!”
All music fans are urged to attend Urban Spread to not only support great music, but also a great cause. Catch Dead Letter Circus this December at Urban Spread Summer Series with special guests Caligula’s Horse, Jericco, Gatherer, Sydonia and Alithia.
