Album Reviews : Krisiun – Forged in Fury

400x400Ah, Brazil. You are always welcome when it comes to metal. As entrenched as a regional metal scene as you can get, Brazilian bands all seem to exert a particularly raw and aggressive sound that is noticeably unique from their North American or European counterparts. Krisiun is no exception, and they continue their 15 year crusade with their newest album Forged in Fury.

This album is exactly what you’d expect coming off of their previous effort, The Great Execution. The brothers have seemingly hit a comfortable medium between their medium-paced grooves and fast-paced blasts. While this album is undeniably heavy, it isn’t an effort to listen to. In fact, it was one of the most easy to slip into this year. This can be credited to Krisiun’s often conventional but well constructed songs. The guitar chugs along permeated by dissonant tremolo sections, old-school fills, sinister dirges, and malevolent solos. The bass is audible enough to be appreciated as it trudges along with the guitar. The drums are pummeling and fast paced, and the vocals are spat with venomous hostility.

The album opens with thrash-fuelled song “Scars Of The Hatred,” and the groove-laden “Ways of Barbarism.” “Dogma of Submission” is a Brazilian ode to early Cannibal Corpse, and “Strength Forged In Fury” denotes the dissonant, chaotic fury of the band. Songs like “The Isolated Truth” and “Oracle Of The Ungod” showcase some or the more complex songwriting prowess the band has developed. The band closes with my personal favourite, “Timeless Starvation,” which chugs along with a wicked old-school thrash based riff.

Krisiun fans, old school death metal heads, and fans of whatever four bands Max Cavalera is a part of at the moment will appreciate this album. Forged In Fury is pure head banging awesomeness.
