Album Reviews : Razorwyre – Another Dimension

352381This quintet from Wellington, New Zealand wastes no time thundering into their debut full-length, Another Dimension. “The Conjuror (Shaman’s Wrath)” explodes with all the wrath of Hell as the speed metal frenzy ensues. That high-energy, vigorous spirit keeps throughout the song and doesn’t let up. Heightened by the Michael Kiske-esque vocal style, frontman Z Chylde steers this beast of metal through a healthy offering of speed/heavy metal carnage.

“Knights of Fire” follows the enjoyable flurry of blows the previous song delivered before “FOBF” enters with a NWOBHM style that’s simply a joy to listen to; bringing to mind the heavy metal bands of the ‘80’s (especially the likes of Iron Maiden and Helloween).

“Nightblade” and title track “Another Dimension” both provide an excellent slice of NWOBHM influenced metal, powering on with catchy, memorable riffs and solos that help bring to mind some of the best work of Dave Murray. There is also an excellent drum rhythm section to these songs that complements the vocals and guitars brilliantly.

From start to finish, Another Dimension is a great metal album, and is definitely a pleasant surprise. While the band’s album artwork was what initially drew me in, their excellent blend of NWOBHM influences and ‘80’s speed metal was what kept me there. For anyone who longs for the days of classic, no-bullshit ‘80’s heavy metal, as well as speed metal coupled with subtle power metal influences, then this is a band to check out. Another Dimension will have you thinking back on a time when it was commonplace to be seen wearing denim and leather, and when you could walk into some small dingy bar and not only hear some truly excellent metal, but watch as the speakers fuzzed and the floors vibrated below you.

Another Dimension is a heavy, catchy, and memorable speed metal opus. This album never lets up and there is great consistency to this record, and equally to this band. In the best spirits of Iron Maiden, Helloween, and Mercyful Fate, Razorwyre’s debut is definitely one that’ll have you coming back for more. And if this is what the band has to offer, I can picture a bright future for them.
