Album Reviews : Edguy – Fucking with Fire (DVD)

It’s a pretty common rule of thumb these days that most metal bands take the plunge and release their first live DVD after they’ve established themselves in the metal realm.

This concept however, hasn’t applied to Edguy until now. For a band that has been around for almost 18 years you would expect some kind of visual performance to be recorded – not counting the one to infinity bootlegs. The band’s 2005 release of “Superheroes” on DVD only skimmed the surface as it offered a small handful of live performances. It was considered more of a teaser than an official live DVD release.

Now, Edguy fan’s can finally rejoice as the band release their landmark live DVD with the humorous title, “Fucking with Fire”.  This DVD offers an amazing selection of songs from the band’s dominate power metal career.  ‘Babylon’, ‘Vain Glory Opera’, ‘Tears of a Mandrake’ and ‘Mysteria’ are just some of the favorites chosen.

Strangely enough, the live performance is alittle saturated with material from the release of “Superheroes”.This is understandable, as during the recording of “Fucking with Fire” the band had just released the “Superheroes” album. I personally don’t have an issue with the selection of songs as I’m quite a huge fan of the “Superheroes” album and Edguy in general.

Don’t expect an elaborate stage set up or fireworks on “Fucking with Fire”. This is just a simple and straight forward performance with love from both the fans and Edguy. You can however, expect Tobias Sammet to dazzle the audience with his trademark star jumps and giddy outspoken humor on stage, as he mimics an energetic and over the top cheerleader on crack.

The whole performance is both fun and humorous to watch. Tobias’ vocals only seem to get stronger and stronger with each performance. Every note is spot on and the band just sound amazing from start to finish.

It’s also no secret that South America are the loudest audiences in the world, and it shows on “Fucking with Fire”. This concert was performed at the same venue where Helloween recorded their last live DVD “Live On 3 Continents”, and the crowd is still crazier than ever

The DVD also includes a plethora of bonus material. An insightful look at the band’s touring during the release of “Superheroes”, along with a selection of official video clips which include ‘Ministry of Saints’ which has been taken from Edguy’s latest release “Tinnitus Sanctus”.

“Fucking with Fire” is both fun and enjoyable to watch. I personally haven’t had so much fun watching a live DVD in a very long time. 8/10
