Interviews : “We want to really tell the story of the different people making beer” – An interview with Mother Junkst (Lagerstein)
Lagerstein – Mother Junkst
Mother Junkst is the Keytar, Violinist and spokesperson for pirate themed, Queensland based metal outfit, Lagerstein. I was certainly looking forward to our conversation, given our previous interaction had taught me a thing or two about the opportunities available to an antipodean metal outfit, provided the band’s members were willing to engage an entrepreneurial mindset and can-do attitude.
That entrepreneurial mindset is once again in full effect based on this conversation with Mother Junkst. Lagerstein’s upcoming Australian east-coast tour teams the band with a perfect ally.
“We’re heading around doing a little bit of the regional stuff and hitting all of our favourite joints in the capitals. It’s a ‘Yeast Coast Brewery tour’, so we’ve tried to do something different with this one. We want to really tell the story of the different people making beer in Australia. We’re going to go around each day in each city to a different microbrewery. We’re taking a film guy with us, and we’re going to be checking out the different breweries that are going on, the different beer they make. I really want to get among why these guys make beer, because I think there’s this really great craft beer scene growing and booming in Australia.”
Alluding to another time-honoured tradition in which young Australian’s participate, the band are approaching the tour in the same method that many have used to indulge in the sights and sounds of Europe.
“We kind of have decided this is a little bit like a ‘Contiki meets heavy metal tour’. We’re going to go around in the daytime to all the breweries and tell a bit of a story and make kind of a mini-documentary about it and about our trip. Then I want to get those beers at the gig on the night and really have some excitement around this awesome scene that’s going on in Australia, as well as doing some great shows with some great bands.”
Lagerstein is a band that knows more than most about travelling Europe, having spent a large part of 2017 booking shows and performing for appreciative audiences across the continent. Mother Junkst explains how they became familiar with each districts residents peculiar penchant for proclaiming the local ale as the premiere beverage… it sounds like it was a KPI for measuring one’s pride in a locale.
“We got inspired by this idea because travelling around, especially in Germany and in the Czech Republic everyone is always very proud of the beers coming from their own homes. It’s like, ‘What’s your favourite beer’, and they’re saying, ‘The beer in my city is the best beer’. You go a couple hours down the road and they’re saying, ‘The beer in my city is the best beer’. People were saying this so much it became almost a joke. Then we got home, and we were thinking, ‘What are the different beers in the Australian cities?’ How would you say that for yourself as an Australian travelling around? That could be a great reason to go and see what’s up there because I think the beers in Australia are better than the German beers anyway.”
Orford certainly has a point when one samples the excellent beer produced by Maroochydore based Sunshine Brewery, the Brookvale based (Sydney) Nomad brewery and god only know how many Melbourne based micro-brewers.
Get out and see the band as they tour through June, what better way to become acquainted with a local beer manufacturer than via the advice from the refined palate of the members of Lagerstein!
Catch Lagerstein on tour across Australia this June with special guests Sudden State. Tickets available from the band’s official website: www.lagerstein.com.
