News : Newtown Social Club is shutting its doors in April this year
Sydney’s renowned Newtown Social Club, which has been under the management of the owners of Melbourne’s The Corner Hotel and the Northcote Social Club since 2012, has made the sad announcement that on April 23rd this year, they will be shutting their doors for the last time. The venue – then known as the Sandringham Hotel – had previously faced a similar situation in 2012, where after being operation for three decades had been declared to owe debts of $3.6 million. After successful rallies on King Street, the venue was later purchased and renamed.
Though the reasoning for their closure has been left rather vague, Newtown Social Club stated it was due to the “current regulatory climate” in Sydney “and the inherent challenges [that] have made it unsustainable”.
The club posted their official statement last night over Facebook, to the frustration and sadness of many punters and fans of the hotel.
See their statement below,
Dear friends,
Three years since saving the venue from the hands of developers, it is with a heavy heart that Newtown Social Club announces it will be shutting its doors on April 23rd 2017.
Whilst the live music part of the business was a resounding success, the current regulatory climate in Sydney and the inherent challenges therein have made it unsustainable. We look forward to exploring new opportunities in the future.
We’d like to thank our amazing staff, as well all the artists, industry, media and punters that have supported us along the way. We’ve had so many incredible shows and dealt with so many fantastic people over the last few years.
We’ve got an exciting run of shows over the coming months including Methyl Ethel, Camp Cope, Frankie Cosmos, Margaret Glaspy, Cosmo’s Midnight, Holly Throsby, Things Of Stone And Wood, Turin Brakes, plus loads more. Head to www.newtownsocialclub.com to grab tickets to our final shows and we hope to see you all over the next few months for a farewell beer.
We’re looking forward to going out with a bang so if you’d like to put on one final show at Newtown Social Club drop us a line via bookings@cglive.com.au.
Much love,
NSC
Thanking their staff, artists, the industry, and more, they suggested joining them in the next few months and giving the venue one last, great hurrah. It’s unclear at this stage what this means for those shows that would have come after the club’s closing date – whether refunds will be offered, or tickets will be valid at replacement venues. We’ll keep you posted as more comes to light.
