News : 2017 spells the glorious return of ‘Metal For Melbourne’ festival!
Three decades ago, the heart of the Melbourne metal scene was the iconic ‘Metal For Melbourne’ record store on the corner of Swanston and Flinders street and a couple handfuls of bands who dominated the scene during the 80s and 90s. During this time, a one-day festival was held for bands to perform and get some recognition. Now, thirty years later, the one-day Metal For Melbourne festival has been revived and is returning to the Victorian city in 2017!
Taking place at the Corner Hotel on January 14 2017, check out the links below for the festival Facebook page and ticket pre-sales!

Featuring eleven bands that formed the core of Melbourne’s metal scene in the ’80s and early ’90s, the 2017 festival will be a chance for the metal community, young and old, to come together in a daylong celebration of Australian metal music and history.
In the early ’80s Melbourne’s metal heart was the iconic “Metal for Melbourne” record store on the corner of Swanston and Flinders streets. Store manager Greta Tate founded the “Metal for Melbourne” festival in 1981 to provide a showcase event for local bands. By 1986, the fifth and final year of the event, it had grown to over 1400 fans crowded into the Storey Hall on Swanston Street to watch six of Melbourne’s best metal bands in action. The focus was always on providing a platform for Australian bands to connect with Australian fans, and that remains the guiding principle behind the 2017 event. To reintroduce the festival to the metal community the 2017 event sees the return of a host of ’80s bands drawn from across the spectrum of styles and genres, and all of whom are determined to bring the house down on January 14. The day will also be recorded and filmed for release later in 2017.
To reflect the ‘community’ nature of this event, the bands and promoters have agreed that all profits from the festival in 2017 will be donated to Melbourne charities providing support for the homeless.
It’s been a long wait for the return of the event that was the highlight of the metal calendar during the mid ’80s. There couldn’t be a better way to start 2017 for local metal fans of all ages.
Welcome back the bands who will be performing on the day!
