Articles : Summer Breeze 2016 – Metal Obsession Preview
Summer Breeze (Germany): August 17-20
Summer Breeze is in its 19th year but this will be my first visit. My metal colleague, Anwar Rizk, has been a number of times and always talks it up so I’m hanging to check it out. Going to Summer Breeze allows me to venture into my favourite region in Germany, Bavaria – home of Neueschwanstein, the Alps, Lindehof Palace, and Konigsee. Honestly, Bavaria is the ultimate German travel destination and nobody is paying me to say it.
True, I am here for metal and, like Wacken, Summer Breeze is a four day festival with two smaller days followed by the massive weekend shows. Summer Breeze hosts 40,000 metalheads, half the size of Wacken, and for your 111 euro entry (around 170 AUD) you’ll have access to around 120 bands. Whilst the official running order is not currently available, it’s an all encompassing list of bands, with a slight focus towards the heavier spectrum.
My interest lies in the following: Almanac, Beyond The Black, DAD, Eisbrecher, Exodus, Fear Factory, Grand Magus, Katatonia, Korpiklaani, Moonsorrow, Omnium Gatherum, Pain, Primordial, Queensryche, Sabaton, Soilwork, Slayer, Steel Panther, Testament, The New Roses, and Winterstorm. I have no doubt this list will expand whilst I’m there as I soak up the atmosphere, purchase even more t-shirts, and leaden myself with far too many CDs. Passe? Not for a self-confessed serial CD collector.
If the above doesn’t interest you, perhaps you’d like the following? Abbath, Arch Enemy, Airbourne, Coheed & Cambria, At The Gates, Bombus, Equilibrium, Gyze, Illdisposed, Lost Society, Mastadon, Monuments, My Dying Bride, Napalm Death, Parkway Drive, Rotten Sound, Satyricon, Subway to Sally, Swallow the Sun, Unleashed, Vader, and more. In fact, for the full list of artists, go to: www.summer-breeze.de/en/bands
I will bring you a full report plus photos of both festivals once all is said (or heard) and done. You can keep up to date with my European journey via Metal Obsession’s official Facebook page with rants and reviews included, once I arrive in Europe.
And the following day I’ll be flying back home – saving to (hopefully) do it all again in 2017.
UPDATE 14/06/2016: There have been a few changes to this year’s lineup, including Slayer replacing Motörhead, and Airbourne replacing Subway To Sally. See poster below for full updated changes.
