Brian Posehn is a professional comedian, actor & writer whose credits include The Sarah Silverman Show, Rob Zombie’s The Devil’s Rejects and co-writer on the 4th season of Metalocalypse. He is also a chronic stoner, a passionate metal-head and one hell of a nerd. With all of this in mind, the question still remains, is Posehn, with all of these credits, experience and cultural kudos, a competent, effective stand up comic? Well, I headed along to Woolly Mammoth’s ‘Mane Stage’ on Saturday night in Brisbane to investigate and I am here to report that the answer is a resounding Yes!

Posehn’s act is the stuff of seasoned professionalism with the themes of self-effacement and dissatisfaction stitching it all together (his lack of coherent segways is part of the humour itself). He knows he is a large, ungainly, awkward individual with noticeably terrible posture and an annoying voice and is the first to tell you about it in hilarious, disjunctive detail. The true art of the material though is the way Posehn unexpectedly turns his vitriol towards edgy, dangerous comedians like Chris Rock and Louis C.K., artists one would think he would be supportive of?

This approach confused me at first but then I realised with satisfaction what he was doing. Yes, Posehn typifies the metalhead/stoner/nerd stereotype but don’t you dare put him in a box or think he is just like other people due to his tastes and cultural affiliations, which I believe is the whole point of being alternative in the first place, is it not?

If you ever get a chance to witness this legend in action, no matter what he is up to, I suggest you do so, the teenage outsider within you will thank you for it.

Catch Brian Posehn’s final show in Australia at the Factory Theatre tomorrow night in Sydney, as part of the Sydney Comedy Festival.
