News : The Legend of Dio gets cancelled

By on January 25, 2015

Last week we posted some rather awesome news relating to an upcoming metal musical dedicated to the life and music of Ronnie James Dio. Dubbed The Legend of Dio the musical would feature songs from Dio’s wide-spanning career, music from his eponymous solo project will play alongside the classic stylings of Black Sabbath and Rainbow.

The brainchild of William Smith (H.M.A.S. Vendetta) and the members of fellow Melbourne band Barbariön, this event will see its world premiere at The Corner Hotel, Richmond in Melbourne on Friday March 6.

Each member will perform a specific part in ‘The Legend of Dio’. With Smith adopting the role of the man himself, Barbariön’s charismatic frontman Myles Tauchert “menaces in the role of Satan”. Kat Stargazer of Horizon’s Edge fame “sexes up the stage as Wendy, Dio’s lover”.

Sadly, due to legal issues the musical has been issued a cease and desist from Dio’s management, Niji Entertainment Group.

Dear Fans,

We want to set the record straight! Niji Productions has nothing to do with “The Legend of Dio: A Metal Musical” that has been advertised. This came as a shock to us as it did to most of you too. Our legal team has sent a cease and desist to the company in Australia that is infringing on the copyright of Ronnie James Dio’s songs, likeness and trademarked logo.

Thank you!

Niji Entertainment Group

Sound Chaser Productions, the organisers of The Legend of Dio released a statement regarding the situation.

The organisers of The Legend of Dio – A Metal Musical wish to announce that the show will no longer be going ahead due to licensing issues. We apologise to Niji entertainment and express our desire to work with them in future. Dio fans are encouraged to keep enjoying Dio’s wonderful music and maintain their respect for Niji entertainment and Dio’s legacy. Long Live Rock’n’Roll!
