                          Moyses Kolesne – Krisiun

There are great death metal bands and then there are those that are absolute legends. To me, Brazilian metallers, Krisiun are one of those bands having dominated the heavy music world with their powerful brand of metal. I had the opportunity to speak with Moyses Kolesne, guitarist of the band about all things Krisiun, their upcoming Aussie tour, new album and a whole lot more!

Speaking to me from his hometown Rio Grande do Sul, Moyses gave me a quick update on what the band’s been upto. ” We are just finishing the tour for the last record, this is the last leg of the tour, we’re going to go through Japan, Australia and Dubai and we’re going come back to. We’re also just in the process of writing the new record which we are going to do in February 2015 and so at the moment just busy with all of that! Really looking forward to our last few shows for these years.”

The last time they visited our shores was in 2009 in support of their album ‘Southern Storm’ and the band is pretty stoked to be returning. ” Last time was many years ago, so it’s really exciting and I know this time there’s a lot of shows going on in Australia. We’re really excited to be playing for our Australian fans again so we really hope to see some people who want to hear pure brutal death metal, that’s what you guys are famous for!”

I also picked Moyses’ brain about the new album because it’s been three years since their last. We need some info don’t we? “The new album will be a little more diverse than our last record ‘The Great Execution’ there’s a couple of slow songs because every record we do we try to do something different and with this one we’re going to try to keep the same band’s personality, brutal and fast but we going to try to do a little more mid-tempo stuff along with the fast tracks too and we’re going to record in Germany again. We already have like 9 to 10 songs, no lyrics yet but song structures are done. I’m really happy with the way it’s coming out, we’re jamming together everyday, we’ve also started soe pre-productuion – recording a few songs and for me I hope people like it as much as I do.”

Speaking of ‘The Great Execution’ , an album that is ten tracks of purely crushing death metal with a significant amount of groove and relentless riffing, Moyses gave some insight into how the band goes about composing such heavy, fierce music. “For us we’re really natural. We’re also a very old-school band in the sense that we just get together and  jam, and everyone has their own opinion we try to come out with something. we’re not the type of the band that sits in front of the computer. We like to be as three and work with all three members with everyone giving their ideas and keeping things as natural because we prefer it that way.”

The band has really come far and carved a niche for themselves in metal music as 2015 marks the 20th year anniversary of their very first release ‘Black Force Domain’ and Moyses shared his thoughts on how things have changed for the band  over the years. ” In a few ways I guess things have changed for us. When you start a band, you’re just a kid, we had no way to have a really good production, no record label etc.  Back in those days there weren’t any computers and social media to spread your music like you can on Facebook. It was tough because we needed to have money to go to the studio and if we did we’d have to do it in a hurry because we didn’t have too much money. We are signed to Century Media these days and they give us really good support. Things have improved a lot since then and we are able to perform in better conditions so that has definitely influenced our music in a way. But at the same time the band is still the same we’re always very excited about everything even after 20 years – tours, new records, recording! The music has changed a little bit, we became more mature, we’ve got more time to compose and record  so our sound is also more diversified while before it was just upbeat, fast and brutal.”

One thing I’ve always loved and respected about Krisiun are the lyrics –  lyrics can be drowned out by  the most blood-curdling sounds but when there is an underlying meaning in a track it makes it that much more worth the listen. ” Most of the lyrics are done by Alex, but many years ago when we were kids it was me and when you’re a kid you just write lyrics for jamming. But we are from the death metal era so we had a lot of influence from bands like Venom, Slayer, Morbid Angel and our songs were a lot about freedom, blood, pentagrams etc. Also when you’re younger you don’t really care but when you get older you want to give a message to people through your music. So nowadays Alex focuses a lot on things like reality, wars, religion and how people manipulate the masses. There is also sometimes a more spiritual, universal side to our lyrics. ”

Krisiun are a band of brothers – The Brutal Brazilian Brother Band as I like to call them and I finally got my chance to talk to Moyses about how that’s been and what it’s like to be in a band that’s only family, staying so strong after all these years. “It feels really good, we’re family, if we were not brothers, the band would have probably already split, like stupid fights happen between bands, they go somewhere else, they have another line-up. We can fight like anyone else, but at the end of the day we’re brothers and we’re always going to try to bury the hatchet and try to be friends again and try to get along. Being in a band with my brothers means a lot to me!’

Moyses had one last message to the Australian fans! ” We’re really happy to be back there, and we can promise that we’ll deliver the real death metal and try to give a really energetic show, we’ll talk to all our friends there, share our thoughts about music, have a big metal celebration. We’re just three normal guys coming from Brazil and playing raw death metal for you! Really looking forward to it!”

Krisiun’s last show is in Melbourne today at the Bendigo Hotel! Don’t miss out!
