News : GWAR vs. Australians for Constitutional Monarchy (more Soundwave drama)

By on February 26, 2014

Aside from several bands dropping out of the festival, Soundwave 2014 has had lots of drama since the tour kicked off in Brisbane last week, which included an incident with Thy Art Is Murder that got on Channel 9 news. After that, American crossover band GWAR have been getting negative mainstream media attention for their stage antics, which includes decapitating an effigy of Prime Minister Tony Abbott, and slicing the breasts off of the Queen of England.

One organisation in particular, Australians for Constitutional Monarchy were appalled by GWAR’s actions at the first two Soundwave shows and have taken it to their website to express their anger about it.

“This act – an extraordinary breach of good behaviour and standards – is particularly offensive coming from visitors, who have been extended Australian hospitality”, said Executive Director, Jai Martinkovits.

“Imagine the public outcry, both from Democrats and Republicans, were an Australian band to behave similarly towards the President and First Lady of the United States”, he continued.

“Gwar, as public figures, are no doubt role models to many impressionable young people. This kind of irresponsible and hateful behaviour has the potential to incite violence both in Australia and abroad.”

“Australians who condemn this behaviour should make their concerns known to the organisers of the Sound Wave festival at info@soundwavefestival.com.”

Since this post, the band and their management have reportedly received numerous death threats from people offended by it, one message wishing them all to die in a fiery bus crash. But GWAR, as you would expect, aren’t fussed at all. Front-thing and master of the world Oderus Urungus has shot back at ACM with a press release commenting on the beheading.

“We were just playing our show in Brisbane and this guy with giant ears wanders out onstage and tells us to go back to Antarctica, so naturally I removed his head from his shoulders. But what was really surprising was that it grew back and I had to chop it off again at Sydney Soundwave.

So we are waiting to see what happens tonight. Will it grow back again? Will it come back as a Koala bear? And what about the poor Queen? We chopped her tits off and stomped the royal baby to death, and all people seem to care about is this Abbott guy. I tell you this, if you could harvest the power of the wind with this dude’s ears, then you could create a machine that would move time and space and enable all the asylum seekers to enjoy Caesar salad every night. And also not have dogs set on them.”

Festival promoter AJ Maddah hasn’t commented on all of the hype over on Twitterland, but has retweeted someone saying that the Abbott beheading was the best moment in Soundwave history.

Oderus Urungus for Prime Minister!
