Articles : Five fantastic free local releases you should have; Part IV.

By on June 24, 2013

The first three of these posts (here, here, and here, although we can’t promise the links are still active) have been some of the most popular articles ever run on Metal Obsession, so some fifteen months after part III, we thought it was about time for another.

Check out these awesome Australian releases and keep in mind that with the rise of Bandcamp, “free” often means “pay-what-you-want”, so if you dig what you hear then make sure to chuck the band a few dollars so they can afford to record another.

Ache – Ache

This band really did come out of nowhere. Brisbane-based label MONOLITH got wind of these Sydney-siders, fell in love, and not long after released their debut “demo” for name-your-price download. It’s five tracks of “cathartic, aggressive, chaotic and noisy metalcore”. Don’t let that last word turn you off though, there’s nothing wimpy about these guys.

Check it.

Nontinuum – The Stars You Gathered, The Stars I Destroyed

One-man band Nontinuum released a pretty decent album back in 2010, but it was this 2012 release that made people go “hooooooly shit”. It’s that whole sludgy, post-black metal style done in near-perfect fashion. It’s monstrous and crushing, but somehow beautiful at the same time. And it’s simply unlike anything else in Australia at the moment. Unfortunately, shortly after release, a mysterious end-slash-indefinite hiatus was announced, but at least you can still download this beauty from…

… this Bandcamp page.

Space Bong – The Death of Utopia

Unlike those last two releases, The Death Of Utopia isn’t new in the slightest. The Adelaide-based sextet released this monster back in 2009, but since partnering up with the rad Art As Catharsis Records, it is now up for name-your-price download. It’s four very lengthy tracks of miserable stoner doom. For those who like things slow. Keep an eye out for a new album later this year.

Do)))o)))m.

asecretdeath – asecretdeath

For those of you who like your music straight-to-the-point, this Melbourne band churned out 12 tracks of excellent mosh-worthy hardcore. And we don’t mean the whole super-slick and mindfuckingly boring side of the genre, this is noisy and genuinely interesting stuff. It might be nearing fourty minutes long, but it’s one of those albums that seems to fly by in twenty.

Mosh.

Hope Drone – Hope Drone

a2177099111_2Four tracks of aggressive hardcore-meets-black metal that will no doubt be up there as one of the best Australian releases to come out in 2013. If you want to throw more genre tags around then it ultimately sits in that whole post-black metal thing, but they have remained on the darker side of things. It’s headphones on and lights-off kind of music. Or live, of course.

(plus they have an awesome name)
