Album Reviews : Uncle Acid and the Deadbeats – Blood Lust
There is something particularly indulgent about listening to Uncle Acid and the Deadbeats. Their fuzzy, tape-worn, retro psychedelic sound, B-grade horror vibes and intonation of ritualistic, drug-induced murder absolutely oozes cool.
With a style heavily steeped in a blend of 60’s and 70’s psychedelic rock with tinges of blues and doom, Uncle Acid are a throwback to early Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin combined with the more intense drug-vibes of Electric Wizard and Monster Magnet and the pop tinges of Neil Young and The Beatles. The result is a retro sound that still manages to avoid being too derivative for it’s own good.
Blood Lust is a loosely defined concept album; an obscure, partially destroyed 70’s horror film – and there is no doubt the group have certainly nailed that atmosphere. With rocking riffs, a pounding rhythm section, and Ozzy-esque vocals drifting above the smoked-out haze, you can’t help but be sucked into Uncle Acid‘s world and feel like a cultist that smoked just a little bit too much hash.
It’s easy to see why Uncle Acid has skyrocketed in popularity. While a few years ago they were just another unknown band, today the Blood Lust LP is getting a repress on Metal Blade and Rise Above Records. The group have also landed a highly coveted spot at Roadburn’s The Electric Acid Orgy, as curated by Jus Oborn of Electric Wizard.
There is little doubt that Uncle Acid and the Deadbeats are one of the coolest drug cults around. This slab of occultist rock and roll that is as fun as hell, and all the more enjoyable with the knowledge that it was put together on a shoe-string budget. Essential for acid-eaters everywhere.
