News : The first (of hopefully many) “Fuzz Off” festival

By on April 19, 2012

May 26th will see the first of what could potentially be many Fuzz Off festivals. The brain child of James Geekie, the rad guy behind Monstrothic, will see some of the finest heavy rock bands get together and celebrate the riff.

“It’s about bridging the gap between so many segmented scenes in this small town of Brisbane by promoting bands who regularly find themselves struggling to fit into any of the established major scenes.”

But who is playing, I hear you ask. These guys:

Death Valley

Only 6 months old, this Brisbane stoner rock super-group consists of members from Rollerball, High Plains Drifter and Heavy Sun. Their premise is loud rock’n’roll as they combine all the required elements to land them a second last billing on a local showcase based upon their genre.

Fear The Setting Sun

Combining heavy riffs and dynamics, the progressive/sludge stylings of Fear The Setting Sun will ensure that you are entranced in what will inevitably be a 3 song set. They’ve played just about every heavy music festival supporting local bands that Brisbane has to offer, so we decided it would legitimise us by throwing them on the bill.

Vassals

Blending the genres of Sludge and Hardcore seems impossible, and if you tried to imagine it you’d probably think of some kind of sloppy mess. Vassals have managed to do it, and they do it well. You’d also wonder how a band with a 2 year history can have a year off. Vassals can do that too, as they have returned to gigging in March this year and are set to build on the foundations they formed in 2010.

Sons Of The Soil

With only 6 months of history under their belt, it’s surprising to see Sons Of Soil deliver such a wide range of songs from heavy blues influence rock to border lining on metal, and doing it so well. The diversity in the songs is clearly working as the band earned themselves a surprisingly large fan base for a band so fresh.

Stone Chimp

1 part rock band, and 1 part acid trip.
