Articles : Five fantastic free local releases you should have, the third
It’s about time we did another one of these, hey?
Wolfe – I
A fairly full-on assault of harsh, blackened grind out of Melbourne. This is only a demo, and a cassette rip at that (which is why it’s one fifteen-minute long audio track) but it’s damn good. And thankfully, due to a few spoken word samples, you can still sort’ve tell where songs start and finish.
These are the words you click on to download it.
Serious Beak – Huxwhukw
You might be getting a bit sick of us going on about how rad this Sydney band is, but it’s true. “”Huxwhukw” is an eccentric amalgamation of mind-melting, toe-tapping, psychedelic, progressive and poly-rhythmic discordant music, sure to please fans of Meshuggah, Mastodon, Botch, The Mars Volta and King Crimson”
Freeeee download over at Bandcamp.
Anno Domini – The Downfall
To celebrate their recent @moshphere festival appearances, and their national tour with Sybreed, Sydney’s Anno Domini released a three track EP of symphonic-yet-brutal death metal. Two of the tracks are heavy, and one is a rather beautiful instrumental piece, and possibly one of the best things they’ve done.
Judd Madden – Doomgroove
This is the fourth epic album from the Ballarat-based musician. Seven tracks and just under an hour of exactly the type of slow, brooding, groovy doom that the title suggests. Plus, it has a turtle on the cover! His previous three albums, some of which are heavy and some of which are not, are up there as well.
Not for those with a short attention span.
The Bird’s Robe Records SXSW sampler
Ok so we’re kind’ve cheating here. Firstly, this obviously isn’t actually an album, it’s a compilation release. Secondly, it’s not exactly heavy material. For those who don’t know them, the Bird’s Robe Collective is a Sydney-based promoter/label/etc that focuses largely on experimental music, and they do a great job. This new-ish sampler features everything from post-rock to crazy prog, and some heavy-ish moments. Regardless, it’s worth a listen. Who knows, you might fall in love with something completely unexpected.
