Album Reviews : Austrian Death Machine – Double Brutal
Following in the tradition of Tim Lambesis’ highly successful “Total Brutal” comes “Double Brutal”.
The album deliveries a mild sense of lighthearted parody humor in this follow up 2 disc tribute album to actor and politician, Arnold Schwarzenegger. The album contains over an hour of laughs and typical thrashy metal-core influence.
The first disc is a collection of new material from As I Lay Dying frontman and creator of Austrian Death Machine, Tim Lambesis and the much loved Ahhnold, voiced by Josh Robert Thompson.
Josh Thompson is best known as “Fake Arnold” among many others characters in his comedic pursues. He seems to pull off a reasonable impersonation of the Governator, as he quite easily mimics Schwarzenegger’s bonehead mannerisms and persona to a tee.
The album is riddled with quintessential catch phrases and quotes from Arnold Schwarzenegger’s line of movies, including Terminator 2, Predator, Conan the Barbarian and Commando, along with a hint of tongue and cheek testosterone fulled humor.
“Double Brutal” is both as brutal and fast paced as its predecessor with every song encouraging a solo or two. It’s pretty linear stuff, nothing technical here…just straight forward metal with a dash of hilarity.
The second disc is a selection of covers ranging from the completely ridiculous to heavy metal classics. Megadeth‘s ‘Killing is My Business”‘ to Judas Priest‘s ‘Hell Bent For Leather’ are just some of the titles Tim Lambesis and company do an exceptional job of revitalising. These metal classics get a jolt of metal-core influence as guests aplenty offer their services, along with Josh Thompson and his persona of Arnold Schwarzenegger to offer a new unique twist to these much loved classics.
I consider myself one of those annoying people at parties who likes to endlessly quote Arnie from his amazing selection of movies, because as we all know, Arnold Schwarzenegger is the greatest movie star of all time.
I quite enjoyed this album, yet the reply value of it would be quite short as the jokes would just get old and tiresome very quickly. Then again, I’m the kind of person who likes to quote Arnie nonstop.
I was honestly in stitch’s when listening to this album. It’s not the most diverse album of all time, but the amount of times you’ll nearly die of laughter is enough incentive to purchase this album. From a personal perspective, I would only buy this if your a fan of parody-esque music. Something in the vain Weird Al Yankovic, yet alittle more brutal…maybe Gama Bomb?
It still offer’s some meaty tracks to bite into yet those tracks are somewhat short lived with the initial introduction of the album’s lighthearted humor. I’m sure with each listen the jokes will get less and less humorous…unless of course your the kind of person to laugh at anything. If you come across this album in a bargain bin I urge you to buy it, it’s utterly hilarious. 7/10
