Cannibal Corpse

w/ Grotesque, Nails of Imposition

Corpsegrinder’s windmilling is unmatched, the ferocious size of his neck constantly swings his hair viciously for the entire set. Seriously, it is unreal. End of review.

Ok, I guess I should also talk about the rest of the gig..

Nails Of Imposition opened the show, and for a band so new to the scene they are steadily building a big reputation for themselves. They have been playing a lot of gigs lately and it has payed off because tonight they played extremely tight and with plenty of enthusiasm, sure to gain even more fans.

It was Grotesque‘s first appearance back from a break from the live scene for a while, and their first with the brand new vocalist. Whilst their technical death metal riffs are still played with proficiency and accuracy, to me the lack of live shows seemed to be obvious in the energy department. That being said, it was still a very promising set and I have no doubt they will be slaughtering the Perth scene again very soon. Not as guttural or charismatic as previous vocalist Taz, but Dan still displayed a great range of unique death metal vocals that seem to be the perfect replacement. Trevor’s super fast double kicks were the standout for me.

When Cannibal Corpse took the stage, the pit went wild. Their ferocity on stage is superb and their ability to captivate the crowd is without question. Technical, brutal, and spirited, Cannibal Corpse ripped through song after song pummelling every ounce of energy from audience.

Corpsegrinder’s character on stage further enhances the live show, speaking of all things from rape to World of Warcraft. Perhaps the most trademark line of the night – “This one goes out to all the women here tonight, we have at least seven of you out there, which is pretty good for a metal show, FUCKED WITH A KNIFE!!!

I must admit I haven’t kept up with the last few Cannibal Corpse releases, so personally it was great to see them play tracks such as Devoured By Vermin, Sentenced To Burn and I Will Kill You, with the obvious encore of Hammer Smashed Face much to the joy of their engrossed spectators.

Somehow after all these years, with so many new death metal bands coming into the international market, Cannibal Corpse still manage to do their own thing and remain inspirational and identifiable. This show certainly convinced me that Cannibal Corpse are one of the top live metal bands in the world and deserve every bit their position in the death metal hierarchy.

Oh, and Corpsegrinder must be pretty close to the best windmiller in the world!
