I would like to apologize in advance to Cemetery Urn and Dawn Of Azazel. Due to Melbourne’s outdated, and ridiculously slow public transport system, I arrived 2 hours late to the gig and sadly missed both their sets. I will however try to catch them in the near future, when they’re back in the local area.

Krisiun…Wow! What can I say. I just came back from one of the best death metal gigs I’ve seen in a very long time. I’m still blown away at how amazing Max Kolesne’s drumming is – blast beats were had all night.

To be honest I didn’t know much of Krisiun’s material. I’ve only heard a few tracks here and there over their Myspace page and also have their latest album, ‘Southern Storm’, but I wouldn’t consider myself a die hard fan. After tonight though, I have gained a new found level of respect for them. They clearly kicked major ass without missing a beat.

It was quite funny though, as soon as I saw the three lads come out on stage, I automatically thought they were the offspring of Raymond Herrera, the drummer of Fear Factory.

They all carried his distinct look, and I had abit of a chuckle with my mate about it as they were setting up. All jokes aside though, Krisiun put on an amazing show for one of the most diverse metal crowds I’ve seen in a very long time in Melbourne.

Krisiun took the auidence back to the hay days of genuine death metal, when it was still considered to be at the top of its class, but at the same time was still heavily underground influenced music to many…and still is, in some way, in this day and age.

Even Alex Camargo, Krisiun’s lead singer stated while up on stage that the scene was still considered heavily underground, and without the support from fans like us in Australia, they wouldn’t be there. The whole band showed their love for the crowd as they continued to thank the fans throughout their set.

Krisiun mesmerized the audience with fast attacking riffs from Moyses Kolesne’s awesome guitar work, aggressive vocals and meaty bass lines from Alex Camargo,  and one of the fastest drummers I’ve seen in a very long time, Max Kolesne. Who pretty much melted every one’s face at the gig when he had the chance to blast out a hefty drum solo half way through their setlist.

The sound mixing was pretty decent for what the Ding Dong Lounge had to offer, there were moments of the odd muddy effect from when Alex’s bass clashed with Kolesne’s rhythm section, but no one seemed to care about that minor detail. Max’s drum mixing was perfect though, it just sounded tank.

Krisiun got a good 80 minute set, which to me didn’t seem long enough. I would have liked to have seen more, but to be honest, everyone was quite content with the large serving of the death metal banquet which was on offer tonight, and left quite content with their belly’s full, so to speak.

Krisiun have a much loved relationship with Sepultura, one of Brazil’s most well known and heavily influential thrash/death metal bands. It quite clearly showed this evening, as even Alex Camargo carried distinct mannerisms that were very close to Max Cavelera throughout the night.

He did it in a way that made him unique in his own special way, but there were times when it reminded me so much of Max Cavalera and co. back in the days of Beneath the Remains and Schizophrenia.

Sadly I didn’t get a chance to get their setlist, but be assured it was an amazing live set.

If you haven’t had the chance to see Krisiun live, I urge you all to see them before they leave Australian and New Zealand shores. They’ll be playing their final shows next week in Australia, then heading to New Zealand to finish up their tour.
